I, Robot (2004) - Review

I, Robot (2004) is a film with the theme of science fiction that tells the human relationship with Artificial Intelligence.

Told that the main character Del Spooner (Will Smith) is not like the robots that had been created for helping human beings in his time, in 2034. This is because of his past, he was disappointed about the robot's decision when choosing between him and a young girl who had to be rescued when the second car accident caused the sinking of their car into the river. With the ability of decision-making based on the probability of life, the robot chose Del Spooner because it has a greater chance of survival rate by 45%, compared to young girl, 11%. Del Spooner finally realized, however, Artificial Intelligence has no conscience, when human beings would try to maintain a greater need (in the case was that the girl), but the robot just choose based on mathematical calculations.

The conflict of the film is the latest release of NS-5 robot, which has a very similar to human intelligence, and the ability of the robot is much better than previous versions. There is a homicide in which the victim is a researcher named Dr. Alfred. This case makes Del Spooner suspects that the robots is suspected killers. This was denied by Suzan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan) because there are three law that become the basis for all orders Artificial Intelligence that exists in that era, such as:
  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

The law is a basic algorithm reinforcing other laws. The researchers also believe that the three laws will not have any gap for the robot to perform the act of murder. However, based on the instructions given Dr. Alfred, Del Spooner believes that there is an error that occurred that made the robot can perform the murder.

This film would be better if the audience has a basic in the world of programming and artificial intelligence. The conversation in this film is dominated by the terms in the world of computing. Especially when Suzan Calvin describes how the performance of NS-5 robot and V.I.K.I.

I am an engineering student of informatics, and was impressed with some of the amazing features that are owned by all the artificial intelligence that exist in the film, are as follows:

  1. The ability of NS-5 to assess changes in the emotions of a person based on the change of a person's voice and pronunciation. (the scene when Suzan Calvin argued with Del Spooner in her home)
  2. The ability of NS-5 to download information from television to increase their knowledge.
  3. The ability of NS-5 for the draw with quality almost like the printer to print the image.
  4. V.I.K.I. capabilities that can help human performance globally.

One thing that occurred to me is, what is the input, and how the process. Very nice to watch with friends majoring in computer because we can discuss about it.

In my opinion, this film is a dilemma that will be through by humans. In the beginning, human being created machines only to assist the work of the human, imperfect and useless if it still gives the error. But because of the desire for more, human being are always trying to invent a machine that can help all human work very well, fast, and accurate. Until one day, robots were invented, perfect in every way. This case will bring to the state that human beings may become useless because of its ability that often giving out the error, the state is being upside down. It is reasonable if machine ultimately more powerful than the humans and using human being like human being used machine as well. And this is the fact that the technology will bring man into the situation as in the film I robot.
